According to Jackson County Sheriff Rocky Harnen, emergency responders were called to a residence on 6th Street after reports of a fire. Once the blaze was brought under control, authorities discovered Russell’s body inside the home. Investigators identified a suspect, 62-year-old John Dunagan, who allegedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Authorities said surveillance footage from the neighborhood showed Dunagan in the area, and he was later located several blocks away after a citizen tip helped deputies track him down.
Dunagan has been taken into custody and charged with murder as the investigation continues.
Russell’s body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Officials say additional details will be released as the case develops.
