James Matthews Obituary., Death; A tragic collision in Delaware has claimed the life of 72-year-old James Matthews, leaving a community in mourning and authorities pursuing charges against the other driver involved.
According to the Delaware State Police, the fatal crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. on April 18, 2026, at the intersection of Rocky Run Parkway and Concord Pike. Investigators say Matthews was driving a Toyota Prius eastbound in a left-turn lane and entered the intersection on a green arrow while attempting to turn north.

At the same time, a Ford Taurus traveling southbound on Concord Pike allegedly ran a red light, striking the side of Matthews’ vehicle with significant force. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles and scattered debris across the busy roadway.
Emergency responders rushed Matthews to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries. His death has left family and friends grappling with sudden and profound loss.
The second driver, identified as 35-year-old Michelle Palazzolo of Wilmington, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities reported signs of impairment at the scene, prompting further investigation.
Following that investigation, Palazzolo has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, along with additional offenses including DUI, failure to have required insurance, and failure to stop at a red light. She was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and later taken to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution after bond was set.
The crash led to the closure of Concord Pike for several hours as investigators processed the scene and cleared the wreckage.
