Investigators say Smith was driving a BMW SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a barrier, and became disabled on the highway. Moments later, a second vehicle—an Acura passenger car—attempted to avoid the disabled SUV but ultimately struck the barrier and then collided with Smith’s vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but despite their efforts, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Acura was not injured in the crash.
The incident prompted temporary lane closures for approximately two hours as troopers worked to document the scene and begin reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
As the Maryland State Police Crash Team continues its investigation, the loss of Mijah Smith has left family, friends, and the wider community in deep sorrow. Loved ones are now left holding onto cherished memories as they try to come to terms with a life taken in an instant.
Her passing has cast a heavy shadow over the community, a painful reminder of how quickly tragedy can unfold on the roadway, leaving behind grief that lingers far beyond the scene of the crash.
