A graduate of Hemphill High School, he was known for his loyalty, strong work ethic, and dedication to family and community. Garrick was a devoted husband to Candice Newell, whom he married in 2023, and a loving father to his daughters, Dallee Newell and Hadley Jones. Family was central to his life, and he often prioritized time with his wife and children despite the demands of his career. His loss leaves an immeasurable void for his immediate family, extended relatives, and close friends.
He is survived by his brother, Drew Merchant, along with numerous relatives and loved ones, and was preceded in death by his parents, Gary Dean Newell and Karen Amanda Wilson Newell, whose guidance helped shape his character.
Professionally, Garrick earned respect as a general foreman supervisor with PMC, overseeing refinery shutdown projects. Colleagues remember him as a steady leader, committed to safety, and a person who led by example even under pressure.
Funeral services were held in Hemphill, Texas, followed by burial at Wise Cemetery, where family, friends, and community members gathered to honor his life. The support and condolences poured in from across the county, reflecting the profound impact Garrick had on those around him.
