Officials said the vessel struck the pier in East Boston, causing the occupants to be thrown onto the rocky shoreline. Three other people aboard the boat sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, four people were on board at the time of the crash. Investigators said Dankert and two friends had reportedly boarded the vessel earlier in the evening with a 40-year-old man after meeting in Boston’s Seaport district.

Authorities and the Freedom Boat Club stated that the boat was allegedly taken without authorization. The exact cause of the crash remains under active investigation.
