According to the Iowa State Patrol, the fatal accident occurred around 7:25 p.m. on Shelby County Road M-16, just north of Shelby. Investigators say Jacob was riding a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound when he collided with the rear of a 2010 Apache 715 field sprayer, which was also traveling northbound and beginning a left turn into a driveway at 226 County Road M-16.

Authorities reported that the impact happened while the farm equipment was mid-turn, causing the motorcycle to leave the roadway and come to rest in a nearby ditch. The field sprayer stopped in the driveway following the collision.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but despite their efforts, Jacob Buman was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries. The operator of the sprayer, identified as 37-year-old Luke Applegate of Shelby, was not injured in the crash.
