Martha Odom Obituary, Death; The Ascension Episcopal School community is mourning the devastating loss of senior Martha Odom, who was tragically killed during a shootout at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday.
School officials confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, also revealing that two other students were injured during the incident and are currently recovering. Two additional students were present at the scene but were not physically harmed.

Martha Odom is being remembered by faculty and classmates as a bright and uplifting presence whose kindness and energy left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Her sudden death has deeply shaken the school community, leaving students and staff grappling with grief.
“Our hearts are heavy as we walk through this moment together,” said Head of School Sarah Davenport. “We are holding one another close in faith and love.”
Davenport emphasized that the school’s immediate priority is supporting students, families, and staff as they process the tragedy. Counseling and pastoral services have been made available on campus to provide emotional care during this difficult time.
“I am always proud of how our Ascension Family takes care of its own,” she added.
Grounded in faith, the school also shared words of comfort, referencing Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
