According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:56 p.m. on U.S. Route 52 westbound near the State Route 522 exit. Investigators said Wells was driving a 2006 Buick Rainier when the vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail for reasons still under investigation.

Emergency responders, including Porter Township Fire, AirEvac medical transport, and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, arrived quickly at the scene. Wells was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in critical condition. Despite efforts by medical staff, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The crash led to a temporary closure of part of the highway as authorities documented the scene and began reconstructing the events leading up to the collision.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and the investigation remains ongoing.
