Randall Brian Lopez Obituary, Death; Authorities in Santa Fe County are investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning following an attempted traffic stop that escalated into a violent confrontation.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the incident began around 4 a.m. on April 18 near the intersection of Agua Fria and San Felipe, where a Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle for speeding. Officials said the rider initially fled the scene.

The deputy later located the motorcycle near the Vista Linda Apartments on Entrada Del Milagro. Investigators reported that the suspect entered the apartment complex parking lot and attempted to flee on foot through a corridor toward Paseo Del Sol.
Authorities say the deputy activated emergency lights, exited the patrol vehicle, and pursued the suspect. During the encounter, both the rider and motorcycle were forced to the ground. At that point, the suspect—identified as 36-year-old Randall Brian Lopez—allegedly produced a firearm and fired at the deputy, missing him.
The deputy returned fire, striking Lopez. Additional deputies arrived and rendered emergency aid until paramedics reached the scene. Despite life-saving efforts, Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials confirmed that the deputy was not struck by gunfire but sustained facial burns consistent with muzzle flash exposure during the exchange.
Investigators also revealed that the firearm used by Lopez had been reported stolen. Authorities stated that Lopez had a significant criminal history, including prior charges such as first-degree murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, concealing identity, and evading law enforcement.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The identity of the deputy involved has not been released as the investigation remains active.
