According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Cummings was traveling eastbound when her vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. Investigators say she then overcorrected, causing the car to cross back over the roadway, travel across the center line, and ultimately crash into a tree.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted to render aid, but Cummings was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
Officials confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. First Sgt. S.B. Lewis also stated that speed is believed to be a contributing factor, and impairment is suspected as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not released additional details as they continue working to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the crash.
