According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Papoulias was riding an e-bike when he attempted to make a left turn onto a service road near a commercial area. Investigators say he entered the path of a gray Honda Ridgeline traveling southbound through a green light.
The vehicle struck Papoulias, and the impact threw him into a second vehicle—a truck that was stopped at a northbound traffic signal. Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
