His death was confirmed in a message to the campus community by senior vice president for community and campus life Jennifer Rosales and interim dean of undergraduate student affairs Anne Hudak.
Lafferty was widely regarded as a standout student and leader whose intelligence, warmth, and dedication left a lasting impact on those around him. College officials described him as “a fiercely intelligent and deeply kind person,” noting that his presence enriched both academic and student life at Dartmouth.

A prominent figure in the college’s debate community, Lafferty served as president of the Parliamentary Debate Team and earned international recognition for his skill in competitive debating. Earlier this year, he achieved a major milestone by winning first place at the World Universities Debating Championship held in Panama City, alongside his debate partner Madeleine Wu.
