Abby Gemme Obituary, Death; Manchester Central High School Remembers Beloved Teacher Abigail “Abby” Gemme

Abby Gemme Obituary, Death
The school community in Manchester is grieving the loss of Abigail “Abby” Gemme, a longtime English teacher at Central High School whose compassion, leadership, and dedication shaped generations of students.

In a message shared with families, students, and staff, the Manchester School District announced Ms. Gemme’s passing, noting that her influence reached far beyond academics. Since joining Central High School in 2002, she had become a cornerstone of the school community, known for her unwavering commitment to student success and well-being.

District leaders described Ms. Gemme as an educator who made it her mission to ensure every student felt seen, supported, and capable. Colleagues recall her as someone who consistently put students first—whether through thoughtful instruction, mentorship, or quiet encouragement during difficult moments.

Over more than two decades at Central, Ms. Gemme took on numerous roles that reflected her deep investment in school life. In addition to teaching English, she served as senior class advisor, track coach, unified basketball coach, yearbook advisor, and an active member of the Central Pride Foundation. Her presence was felt in classrooms, on athletic fields, and at school events where she was often found cheering students on or guiding them through milestones.

Staff members remember her as a trusted collaborator and friend, someone who helped foster a supportive and positive culture within the school. Students, past and present, have shared memories of a teacher who believed in them—sometimes before they believed in themselves.

In response to the loss, the district has arranged counseling support for those affected. Open support sessions will be held at Central High School on Tuesday, February 24, from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with counselors from the district and the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester available to assist. Additional counseling services will be offered on Monday, March 2.

School officials are encouraging students, staff, and families to lean on these resources and on one another as they navigate the days ahead.

As the community reflects on Ms. Gemme’s legacy, many are focusing on the countless lives she touched through her kindness, dedication, and belief in young people. Though her absence will be deeply felt, school leaders say her influence will endure through the students she inspired.

Superintendent Jennifer Chmiel, Ed.D., reaffirmed the district’s commitment to supporting the community, pledging continued care for students, families, and staff during this difficult time.
