The city of Hahira is mourning the loss of one of its own after a fatal early-morning crash claimed the life of a police officer along Interstate 75 in Lowndes County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Officer Caleb Abney of the Hahira Police Department was killed shortly after midnight Thursday while conducting a traffic stop on northbound Interstate 75. Investigators said the crash occurred around 12:09 a.m.

Troopers reported that Officer Abney had stopped a Nissan and was seated inside his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated when a Chevrolet Camaro drifted onto the highway shoulder and struck the rear of his patrol car. The force of the collision pushed the patrol vehicle into the stopped Nissan, causing all three vehicles to leave the roadway.

Officer Abney was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camaro was taken to South Georgia Medical Center, where they later succumbed to their injuries, authorities said.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is handling the investigation to determine what led to the crash. Officials confirmed that Officer Abney’s family has been notified.
