The Lansing community is mourning the loss of Tanya Thompson, a cherished school counselor whose compassion and dedication touched generations of students. Thompson passed away early Tuesday morning, leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness, guidance, and joy.
For the past eight years, Thompson served at Lansing Middle School, where she became a trusted advocate for students and families alike. Her work followed 17 years of service at Southern Cayuga, completing a career devoted entirely to supporting young people through some of their most formative years.

Colleagues and students remember Thompson as a constant source of warmth within the school. Whether offering one-on-one or group counseling, leading classroom discussions on friendship and kindness, or energizing students with spontaneous Zumba lessons, she brought empathy and enthusiasm into every space she entered. Her influence extended well beyond academic guidance, shaping lives through encouragement and genuine care.
Thompson’s favorite color, yellow, has become a meaningful symbol within the community—reflecting the brightness and positivity she shared so freely. As Lansing continues to grieve, residents are encouraged to honor her memory by supporting one another and carrying forward the compassion she modeled daily.
She is survived by her husband, Aaron Thompson, a respected member of the Lansing community, and their children, Erin and Ryan Thompson, both of whom remain closely connected to the Lansing school family. The loss of Tanya Thompson is deeply felt, but her legacy of grace, love, and unwavering dedication to children will endure for years to come.
