Investigators believe the pickup crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an eastbound 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 that was towing a trailer carrying a mini excavator at the time of the crash.

Police identified one of the victims as 29-year-old Troy Rasse of Pahoa, who was a passenger in the Toyota Tacoma. Authorities said he suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second passenger in the Toyota, identified as 24-year-old Jadelyn Cariaga of Hilo, also sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

Officials said a third passenger in the Toyota and the driver of the Dodge Ram suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma and another passenger in the Dodge were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators noted that the roadway was wet at the time of the collision, which may have contributed to the crash.

The deadly incident remains under active investigation as authorities continue reviewing evidence and working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal wreck.

The loss of Troy Rasse and Jadelyn Cariaga has left loved ones and community members mourning as family and friends remember two lives tragically cut short in the Hawaii Island crash.
