Desmond T. Montgomery Obituary-Death – Authorities in Richland County, South Carolina, are investigating a fatal shooting involving a security guard outside Club Barcode early Wednesday morning that left a 28-year-old man dead.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded around 1 a.m. to Club Barcode, located at 224 O’Neil Court, after receiving reports of a shooting outside the nightclub.
When deputies arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying on the ground outside the club. The victim was later identified as Desmond T. Montgomery, 28, of Greeleyville, South Carolina.
Montgomery was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries.
Investigators said a security guard at the club told deputies he opened fire during an altercation that escalated outside the business.
According to authorities, the incident began inside the nightclub after an argument reportedly broke out between two individuals. Security guards identified as Nicholas Horton, 41, and Mark Hammond escorted the pair outside.
Once outside, deputies said the woman involved in the argument became “unruly and aggressive” toward Hammond, who then deployed pepper spray during the confrontation.
Investigators stated that the male companion subsequently went to his vehicle, returned to the scene, and demanded to know who had pepper-sprayed the woman. Authorities said the situation intensified moments later.
Deputies reported that after the woman pointed toward Hammond, Horton allegedly saw the man lift his shirt and pull a firearm from his waistband. Investigators said Horton then fired multiple shots.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that a firearm was recovered near Montgomery at the scene, while Horton’s weapon was also secured as evidence.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
Officials also noted that this marks the second shooting involving a security guard at Club Barcode this year. Earlier in January, another security guard allegedly shot a patron in the club’s parking lot.
