When responders arrived, they discovered Ramsey’s bass boat lodged against a breakwater—a fixed structure designed to reduce wave impact near marinas and boat ramps. Ramsey, who was the sole occupant of the vessel, was found deceased onboard.
With assistance from the Bartow County Fire Department, officials recovered his body and transported it to shore. The Bartow County Coroner’s Office later took custody, while the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Ramsey had been alone at the time of the crash.
Preliminary findings indicate that the boat struck the breakwater, a structure that can be difficult to detect at night, especially under low visibility or inadequate lighting conditions. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Ramsey was wearing a life jacket or if other factors contributed to the accident.
The investigation remains ongoing, led by DNR game wardens, who are responsible for examining all boating fatalities across the state.
Lake Allatoona, a reservoir managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is one of Georgia’s busiest recreational waterways. Spanning nearly 11,860 acres with about 270 miles of shoreline across Bartow, Cherokee, and Cobb counties, it attracts millions of visitors each year for fishing, boating, and leisure activities.
Ramsey, who lived in nearby Dallas in Paulding County, was known to frequent the lake and its public access points, including Allatoona Landing.
As news of the tragedy spreads, authorities are urging boaters to exercise caution, particularly at night, by ensuring proper navigation lighting and wearing Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
Patrick “Pat” Ramsey is being remembered as the sole victim of a sudden and heartbreaking accident, one that has left a deep sense of loss among those who knew him and within the wider community.
