According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 10:10 p.m. on Columbia Highway (Highway 378) near Roseland Drive, just outside the Saluda city limits. Investigators said Wharton was traveling westbound on a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle when he struck a deer in the roadway.

Following the initial collision, authorities reported that Wharton was left in the roadway. A second vehicle, which has not yet been identified, subsequently struck him and fled the scene. Emergency responders later confirmed that Wharton died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

On Thursday, Saluda County Coroner Angie Rita officially identified the victim as Mark W. Wharton of Monetta.
