According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. east of Dundee Road when a 2011 Nissan Sentra traveling eastbound crossed the center line for reasons still under investigation and struck a westbound 2020 Ford Explorer head-on. The impact forced the SUV off the roadway and into a ditch.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures, but Mike and Rachel Elbert were pronounced dead at the scene. Their daughter was transported in critical condition to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 70-year-old woman from New Haven, Missouri, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Washington for treatment.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Hermann, where the Elbert family was deeply rooted in community life. The young girl was a student at Hermann Elementary School, while Mike Elbert was known for his involvement as a volunteer assistant football coach at Hermann High School, where he was admired for his dedication to local youth.

In response to the heartbreaking loss, the Gasconade County R-1 School District has activated counseling services for students and staff. Superintendent Dr. Geoff Neill described the incident as “a sad day for that family—a sad day for our school district.”

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, the Hermann community stands united in sorrow—grieving, supporting one another, and remembering a family whose lives were cut tragically short.

Three lives gone too soon, but never forgotten.
