The incident unfolded Tuesday morning, April 14, 2026, when officers with the Omaha Police Department responded to an emergency call at a Walmart store on South 72nd Street. The initial 911 call, reportedly made by Noemi Guzman, was abruptly disconnected, raising concerns. A second caller alerted dispatchers that a woman armed with a large kitchen knife was with a small child.

When officers arrived at the scene around 9:13 a.m., they encountered Guzman in the store’s southern parking lot area. Police say she was holding a knife and standing near a shopping cart carrying a 3-year-old boy. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, authorities say she refused to comply and continued making threats.
According to investigators, the situation escalated when Guzman allegedly injured the child with the knife. Officers then discharged their firearms, striking her. Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene, but she was pronounced dead shortly after.
The young boy was quickly pulled to safety by a guardian and a bystander, who rendered immediate aid before emergency medical personnel transported him to the hospital. Officials later confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening.
Further investigation, including review of store surveillance footage, revealed that Guzman had allegedly taken the knife from inside the store prior to the confrontation. Video also showed her confronting the child and guardian inside the building, forcing them through the aisles and eventually into the parking lot.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer commended the officers involved, stating they acted with professionalism and urgency in a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation, ultimately preventing further harm.
