Lane Tech High School Lockdown Today; Students and staff at Lane Tech College Prep High School were briefly placed on lockdown on Friday afternoon after a potential threat was reported on campus. Authorities later confirmed that the threat was non-credible and that no one was in danger.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the school at 2501 W. Addison Street shortly after 1:25 p.m. following a call involving an “unknown object.” The Chicago Fire Department initiated a Level 1 hazardous materials response while crews investigated the report. By 1:44 p.m., firefighters had secured the scene and determined there was no active threat.

During the investigation, the school implemented a soft lockdown, meaning students remained in classrooms while normal activities continued in a controlled manner. Principal Edwina Thompson notified parents that the precautionary measure was taken following a phone call from an unknown source reporting a potential threat.
“Police later determined the potential threat was non-credible,” Principal Thompson said. “There is no safety threat to our school, and everyone is safe.” She also confirmed that all after-school activities would proceed as scheduled.
Chicago Police Department officers assisted in evaluating the campus, during which a backpack was located inside a second-floor men’s restroom. One individual was reportedly detained while authorities examined the item. Officials have not released further details regarding the detention or potential charges.
