The YWCA community is mourning the passing of Fiona Chapman, a deeply respected colleague and cherished friend who died following a brave and determined health battle. Her loss is felt profoundly across the organization, even as those who knew her reflect with gratitude on the warmth, joy, and compassion she shared throughout her life.
Fiona was known for meeting adversity with extraordinary grace. From the moment of her diagnosis, she faced each challenge with resilience, humor, and a steadfast commitment to living fully. Colleagues recall that even during difficult times, Fiona remained unmistakably herself—thoughtful, vibrant, and quick to bring light into the room. Her strength was steady rather than loud, and her optimism left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
She joined the YWCA in 2013 and dedicated more than a decade of service to the organization. Over the years, Fiona held a variety of roles, including Childcare Educator, Program Supervisor, Site Supervisor, and Family Registrar and Staffing Coordinator. While her professional titles reflected her growth, they only hint at the depth of her influence. Fiona was a trusted mentor, a source of reassurance for coworkers, and a caring presence for countless children and families. Her work was marked by empathy, patience, and a genuine commitment to people.
Outside of the workplace, Fiona embraced life with enthusiasm and intention. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, traveling, camping, and uncovering hidden treasures through thrifting. Friends fondly remember her love of good food and music, and the joy she found in life’s simple pleasures. At the center of her world were her family—her husband, Bill, and her daughter, Hannah—whom she loved deeply and spoke of with immense pride.
Fiona’s presence had a unique way of uplifting those around her. Whether through humor, encouragement, or quiet understanding, she made people feel seen and supported. Many describe her as someone who could change the tone of a room simply by being in it.
As the YWCA community comes together in grief, they also celebrate the lasting impact Fiona made on staff, educators, children, and families. Information regarding a Celebration of Life will be shared in the coming days.
Fiona Chapman will be remembered for her kindness, courage, and the light she brought into so many lives. Her legacy lives on in the relationships she nurtured and the community she helped shape.
