One of the victims was Jorborius Whitehurst-Close, a senior at North Pitt High School, a fact confirmed by Pitt County Schools. The other victim was identified as 44-year-old Eric Colley, who authorities say was driving the wrong way at the time of the crash. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators reported that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. The Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances that led to the collision.

Whitehurst-Close was well known at North Pitt, not only as a student but also as a key member of the school’s football program. Wearing the No. 8 jersey, he played as both a wide receiver and defensive back and was remembered by teammates as hardworking, positive, and uplifting.

Former teammate and friend Ethan Wilson described him as a bright presence within the school. He said Whitehurst-Close showed up every day ready to work and brought energy and encouragement to those around him.

In response to the loss, Pitt County Schools deployed a support team of counselors, social workers, and school-based mental health professionals to North Pitt High School. District officials said the team created safe spaces for students and staff to gather, talk, remember, or simply sit together during a difficult day.

School leaders described the atmosphere on campus as heavy and emotional, noting that many students are grappling with yet another loss. Counseling services will remain available as long as needed to support the school community.

As the investigation continues, students, staff, and families are honoring the memory of Jorborius Whitehurst-Close, remembering a young life defined by dedication, kindness, and a spirit that left a lasting mark on North Pitt High School.
