Known for his unwavering commitment to public safety, Gerard’s legacy is marked by courage, leadership, and a lifelong dedication to helping others.
Gerard’s journey in firefighting began at a young age through the Hazelwood Fire Department Explorer Post, a stepping stone that shaped his future in emergency response. He officially joined the Hazelwood Fire Department on November 11, 2000, where he quickly distinguished himself through hard work and professionalism. Over the years, he rose through the ranks—serving as a firetruck driver/operator by 2008, earning Acting Captain certification, and later being promoted to Captain in 2016.

His leadership reached new heights in January 2021 when he was appointed Battalion Chief of Training. In this role, Gerard was instrumental in preparing firefighters for critical situations while also serving as Deputy Director of Emergency Management. His expertise extended beyond local duties, as he actively contributed to regional and statewide emergency preparedness efforts. He held key positions within the St. Louis Area Regional Response System and represented Region C in the Missouri Emergency Management Association, further solidifying his impact across Missouri.
Throughout his distinguished career, Gerard Hagedorn earned numerous honors that reflected both his bravery and compassion. Among these were multiple Life Saving Awards from the City of Hazelwood, the Above and Beyond Award in 2009, several Unit Citations, and the prestigious Medal of Bravery in 2019 alongside his crew. Beyond formal recognition, he was deeply appreciated by the community, with many individuals and families expressing gratitude for the lives he touched during emergencies.
Gerard’s passing is not only a loss to his department but to the entire community he served with dedication and integrity. He will be remembered as a respected leader, a mentor to many, and a true public servant whose influence will continue to inspire future generations in emergency services.
