Deputies, along with officers from local police departments in Appleton and nearby Benson, responded to the report. While officers were en route, the caller reported that the suspects had also fired shots at a nearby home on Reuss Avenue.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they located the two suspects inside a green SUV. Authorities said the pair exited the vehicle, and the male suspect opened fire toward deputies, prompting officers to return fire.
Officials stated that gunshots were exchanged during the confrontation before the man and woman retreated back into the SUV. Fortunately, neither suspect was injured during the exchange.
Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter around the vehicle after the pair refused to surrender. Investigators said both individuals appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and were behaving erratically during the standoff.
After the suspects continued to ignore commands to exit the vehicle, officers deployed tear gas into the SUV. Shortly afterward, both the man and the woman exited and were taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects were taken to separate hospitals for medical evaluation before being transported to jail. No deputies, officers, or local residents were injured during the incident.
The case is now being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which routinely reviews officer-involved shootings and major incidents involving law enforcement.
