A devastating incident on northbound Highway 99 in Delano claimed the life of a pedestrian late Saturday evening, authorities confirmed. The fatal accident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. near Cecil Avenue when the individual unexpectedly stepped onto the busy freeway and was struck by multiple vehicles.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the pedestrian was first hit by an Audi and subsequently struck by a Chevrolet as traffic continued to flow. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene. No information regarding the victim’s identity has been released pending family notification.
CHP officers closed the northbound lanes for approximately two hours to conduct a thorough investigation. Officials have not indicated alcohol or drugs as a factor but are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the pedestrian entering the highway.
